In keeping with the character of Victor Harbor, the Ambulance Station has been constructed in simple, bold forms, out of quality, robust materials. It takes its design cues from the seaside vibe, offering up streamlined curves in brick (for the station) and steel (for the ambulance bays), and kept light with selections of materials in light greys and whites, a palette complemented by the range in textures; solid brickwork, smooth, angled panels above and below windows, smooth, angled sun shading over the windows and profiled steel for the ambulance bays.
The exception to the light-coloured finishes lies in the main entry porch, clad in a rich rusty red which continues inside and travels through to the rear door. Externally, this serves to complement the similarly-hued fence leading to it and screening the north side of the site, such fence being patterned with an Indigenous design, significant to the local community.
The successful completion of this project aligns with the SA Health Stategic Plan objectives of strengthening primary health care and enhancing hospital care. As well, it aligns with multiple parts of the SAAS Strategic Plan, particularly on community participation, providing patient-centred emergency services and ensuring their service integrates and evolves with the health system.
This station accommodates up to three crews and garaging for six emergency operational vehicles.
The building is set back to align with its neighbours and within the site is carparking for staff and visitors. SAAS has a well thought out list of accommodation requirements and this building caters to those, along with its preferences for room adjacencies, most importantly providing fast access to emergency vehicles as the calls come in.
There is a delightful courtyard for use by staff which overlooks the site landscaping and beyond to the beautiful hills around Victor Harbor.
This project was a happy collaboration between architect, consultants, clients, end-users and builder, resulting in an Ambulance Station that works for the SA Ambulance Service and the district it serves.
